JUVÉDERM®

WHAT IS JUVÉDERM®?

Juvéderm® is a type of dermal filler that works in two ways: it smooths away fine lines and wrinkles all for a softer, more youthful appearance. It is typically used to restore volume in our cheeks causing them to “lift” and smooth lines around the mouth and nose. Juvéderm® is not a permanent treatment and cannot give you the same results as plastic surgery. Juvéderm® is one of the leading hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers on the market, from Allergan, the makers of Botox®. All Juvéderm® fillers are natural fillers because they are made of mostly hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is found naturally in the body and works by delivering nutrients to our skin and this helps retain moisture and softness and adds volume. As we age, hyaluronic acid in our skin decreases, causing the skin to lose its fullness. Our skin then begins to droop, sag, and wrinkle. The Juvéderm® formula is non animal-based and has a very low risk of allergic reaction or rejection.

IS JUVÉDERM® RIGHT FOR ME?

Anyone over the age of 35 could use at least a little help with loss of volume as a result of natural aging. Juvéderm® is an excellent solution if you are looking for a quick fix for lines, wrinkles, scars (such as those caused by acne), or cheeks that have lost fullness. You can plan on the results lasting up to a year, depending on the body part that is injected and the individual receiving the injections. Juvéderm® may not be as effective if you have severe scarring, thinner skin, or looser skin. For the best results, it is recommended to avoid medications that cause your blood to thin. Even aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) should be avoided about a week before treatment to reduce bleeding and bruising at the injection site. It is not recommended to get Juvéderm® injections if you are pregnant or nursing. In general, you should be in good health, avoid smoking, and should have a realistic, positive outlook.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The procedure itself will last 15-30 minutes, depending on how many syringes are needed and the body part(s) that are being treated. A typical session uses 1 or 2 syringes of Juvéderm®. The syringe of Juvéderm® will be injected into the mid to deep dermis (below the outer layer of the skin). You will be able to see your results immediately! You may experience some minor swelling or bruising but this should resolve after a week. The results from Juvéderm® injections will last for a year depending on the body part being treated and it will naturally be broken down and reabsorbed by your body over time.
