Botox® Cosmetic has several important uses beyond addressing wrinkles and other cosmetic concerns. Botox has been successfully used to treat excessive underarm sweating, restoring your confidence and sense of comfort each day. Long Branch, NJ cosmetic physician Dr. Thomas Theocharides offers this effective treatment for patients seeking relief from excessive sweating, known clinically as severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis. The Botox injections work by temporarily blocking the release of a chemical in our body that is responsible for activating the body’s sweat glands. When injected into your underarm area, the Botox will shut off the sweat glands there.
What Is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition affecting both men and women where the sweat glands produce more sweat than is necessary to control your body temperature. This can result in very wet, uncomfortable underarms that stain your clothing, increase odor and cause embarrassment in both social and professional settings. It can interfere with everyday life and activities.
Over the counter treatment can include the use of prescription strength deodorants, but in many severe cases it is not sufficient. Botox is safe and effective in treating these severe cases. It balances the problem and relieves the condition for several months at a time.
Many people who suffer from Hyperhidrosis tell us that they get nervous because they sweat, then sweat more because they are nervous. Dr. Theocharides will discuss your personal concerns and help you to decide if Botox is the solution to your problem.
Botox Treatment: What To Expect
Botox® injections are performed in one of our offices in Howell, NJ or Ocean, NJ. You can plan to be here anywhere from 10 – 30 minutes. We ask that you refrain from activities that will cause excessive sweating on the day of treatment (such as intensive exercise or the use of a sauna). We want you to feel as comfortable as possible during treatment. In some cases, we may use an anesthetic cream to numb the treatment area. In general, treatment is generally quick and painless. Dr. Theocharides will make a series of small injections under the arm with a very fine needle. You should notice a significant decrease in sweating by the fourth week. The results from having Botox injected into your underarm areas will last for up to 6 months for most patients.*
Botox is not a cure for Hyperhidrosis and most patients will experience a gradual increase in sweating after several months. Dr. Theocharides will work with you to determine the appropriate time for a follow up treatment.
