What Causes Spider Veins?
There are many things that can contribute to getting spider veins, however, the root cause isn’t clear to researchers. They think that genetics, the environment, or both can play a part. They seem to be made worse by exposure to the sun, alcoholism, excess pressure, or hormonal changes. Dermatomyositis, scleroderma, rosacea, pregnancy, and aging may all be factors that can increase the chance of developing these veins.
Spider Vein Symptoms
Spider veins and varicose veins are caused by the same condition. It’s called venous insufficiency and causes weakened or damaged valves in the veins. Spider veins are smaller, and the lines are often flat or very slightly raised. In color, they’re usually blue, purple, or red. They can cause you mild discomfort, but usually, you don’t suffer any pain and it’s mainly a cosmetic issue.
Spider Vein Treatment with Sclerotherapy
At Beginnings, Dr. Thomas Theocharides provides sclerotherapy to treat spider veins. It’s considered the gold standard for spider vein treatment and is successful in 95% of cases. Sclerotherapy is designed to be minimally invasive and can eliminate the look of both spider and varicose veins, as well as getting rid of symptoms that come along with them.
To determine if this treatment is right for you, you’ll have a consultation with Dr. Theocharides. He’ll discuss your budget, goals, and medical history to make sure you’re a suitable candidate for this form of treatment.
Sclerotherapy is done right in the office and is virtually painless. We inject a sclerosing agent directly into the problem veins. This agent irritates the veins, causing them to collapse and their appearance to fade. Typically, you’ll need multiple rounds of sclerotherapy to achieve the results you’re looking for.
For each of our patients, a custom treatment plan is made. The number of sclerotherapy visits you’ll need is determined for each individual case. On average, you’ll need between 2-6 treatments. Each treatment takes about 15-20 minutes in our office. It is possible for individual veins to disappear after just one session, but if you want long-lasting results, multiple treatments are used.
Different Vein Treatments
We also offer laser treatment that can be used as a compliment to sclerotherapy, helping you to achieve a better result. If you have spider veins that are on your face or other cosmetic concerns, laser treatment can replace sclerotherapy. During your consultation with Dr. Theocharides, he’ll decide if laser treatments can benefit your specific case of spider veins.
